About

Naqiya Attarwala
I work across painting, drawing, printmaking, and hand-painted objects — moving between canvas and paper, ink and acrylic, depending on what a subject asks for. Some pieces start as a quick study of a horse or a face; others begin life as a pattern for a tote bag or a set of coasters. The throughline is a sketchbook habit that rarely takes a day off.
I'm still writing the fuller version of this page — for now, this is a quick introduction, with more of my story to come.
In the studio
Most of my work begins as a small sketch — sometimes from life, sometimes from a photograph — before it grows onto a larger surface. Graphite and ink carry my early studies; acrylic and gouache take over once a piece is ready to be finished. A well-worn set of brushes has outlasted more than a few palettes.
The hand-painted objects — totes, coasters, small logo work — grow out of the same sketchbook habit, just applied to a different kind of surface. I try not to be precious about the medium; the subject decides.

I take on a limited number of commissions — a portrait, a pattern for a tote or set of coasters, or anything else in between. If something here sparks an idea for a piece of your own, send me a note and let's talk.
